Catalogue of a one lot auction sale held in Hong Kong on the 4 October 2010, a highly important painting by Zhang Xiaogang: Chapter of a new century – Birth of the People’s republic of China II. Oil cotton tape and black and white photocopies collage on canvas signed in Pinyin and Chinese and dated 1992.
In Chapter of a New Century – Birth of the People’s Republic of China II, the focus of these images turns to the Cultural Revolution period from 1966 to 1976, which is also the year in which Mao Zedong died. Through this examination of the recent history that led to the birth of the People’s Republic. Zhang Xiaogang still manages to consider the events in terms of the personal experience of a single individual. He juxtaposes himself amid history by inserting personal photographs, such as the group portrait to the uppermost left corner: that is of Zhang Xiaogang and his friends, taken in 1978. The very small single portrait photograph to the lowermost left is of Zhang Xiaogang himself, taken in 1977 in Yunnan province.
