Jin Shangyi was born in 1934 in Jiaozuo, Henan. He graduated from Painting Department of Central Academy of Fine Arts in 1953. He finished his oil painting courses offered by Konstantin M. Maksimov in 1957 and stayed there teaching sketch at Printmaking Department and was transferred to the 1st Studio of Oil Painting Department in 1962. As former President of Central Academy of Fine Arts, he now holds titles of doctoral supervisor, professor, Honorable President of Chinese Artists Association, Vice president of China Federation of Literary and art circles, standing committee member of Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference.
